Six Car Buying Secrets

How do you get the best price on your next car? You can start by taking notes as you read through the following six car buying secrets.

1. Dealer Invoice is not Dealer Cost

You probably know that the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is the just a starting point in negotiations. You may have even planned to look for the Dealer Invoice Price listed on the sales sheet on the car. But did you think that the final price had to be a bit over that, to leave the dealer a bit of profit?

Dealer invoice does not necessarily define the lowest you can go, because it is not the actual dealer cost for the vehicle. It's essentially a lie created by manufacturers and dealers to help THEM negotiate with you. The dealers real cost is almost always substantially less than this, so keep that in mind when you start talking price.

2. Holdbacks and Incentives

The dealers true costs are lowered by special incentives they're offered by the manufacturer, like volume discounts and holdbacks. What's a holdback? It's an amount paid to the dealer by the manufacturer upon the sale of each car. Instead of simply selling the cars to the dealer for less, this is a way to artificially inflate the "dealer invoice" cost. That helps them in negotiations with "smart" customers.

You can find out about holdbacks and incentives. The organization Consumers Reports, for example, in addition to covering these things in their magazine, also has a service that provides you information about any car you are considering buying - including incentives and holdback amounts. Their "New Car Price Service" is advertised in their magazine and online.

3. Extras That Are Not Worth It

Profit on a new car is made as much from the extras as the sales price. Safety features or a radio might be worthwhile, but many others are almost worthless or at least priced way too high. As a rule avoid undercoating, rustproofing, fabric protection, windshield etching and extended warranties and anything else you really don't need.

4. Your Trade In

Discuss everything else and get a price before you mention that you have a trade in for the dealer. If you mention this up front, you may be paying a higher price on the new car just to make a decent price on your trade in possible. Look up the value of your existing car in one of the used car price guides (available in your public library or online) before you go shopping, and take the dealer offer if it is anywhere near this. Otherwise you might do better selling the car yourself.

5. Timing Secret

The best time to buy a new car? Watch for sales, special manufacturer rebates and such, since you can save hundreds of dollars or more at these times. However one of the lesser known car buying secrets is to shop near the end of the month.

Dealers often pay bonuses to employees based on total sales, which are tallied monthly. As the end of the month approaches then, the sales people are often trying to meet some goal that might make them a bigger bonus for that month. You have more negotiating power at this time, of course. You might say "I think I'll wait until (pick a day that is the first or second of next month) to make a decision." That comment alone could bring the price down if the sales person is near some quota.

6. Used Cars Cost Less

This might be the most valuable of these car buying secrets. It's also a secret of the wealthy. Millionaires may buy more Mercedes or BMWs than Honda Civics, but about 40% of them buy these cars when they are a few years old. They recognize value. Studies of repair costs and other data show that a three to four-year-old car costs up to 50% less per mile to own as a new car, and a three year old car should look almost new.
